  • A non-diet approach focuses on health and wellbeing rather than placing weight at the centre of care. It is not opposed to weight loss or to nutrition science. Instead, it takes a harm-reduction perspective that aims to reduce the risk of disordered eating and eating disorders by avoiding prescribing these behaviours known to contribute to them. These behaviours include:

    • Counting calories and macronutrients

    • Fasting

    • Skipping meals

    • Avoidance of certain foods or food groups

  • A non-diet dietitian works closely with you to understand your individual needs, preferences, and experiences with food.

The goal is to support you in improving your nutrition and overall health in a way that feels sustainable and personalised.

During consultations, a non-diet dietitian carries out a thorough assessment of your health and wellbeing, which may include:

    • Current symptoms or concerns

    • Medical history

    • Medications and supplements you take

    • Lifestyle factors

    • Eating patterns and dietary habits

    • Your relationship with food

    • Food preferences

They may also review relevant blood test results and medical reports to gain a complete picture of your health history.

  • A non-diet dietitian supports you in improving your health and developing a more positive relationship with food and your body, without focusing on weight loss or the use of restrictive, rule-based, unsustainable diets.

They’ll walk alongside you to gently explore and unlearn the unhelpful beliefs and behaviours shaped by diet culture. You’ll learn that struggling with diets is not a personal failing, rather it’s exactly how diets are designed fail you.

With the guidance on a non-diet dietitian, you’ll work towards reconnecting with your body’s cues, rebuilding trust in your body, and finding freedom around food.
